Korora 20 (Peach) beta released

The Korora Project is pleased to announce the first beta release of version 20 (codename “Peach”) which is now available for download.

Note: This beta release of Korora is derived from a beta release of Fedora1 and as such there will likely be a larger number of bugs and many software updates.

For the first time we are introducing an Xfce desktop, which was made possible thanks to Maik Adamietz (AKA DarkEra) and others in the community. We would also like to thank Jeremiah Summers (AKA JMiahMan) for his assistance in updating the KDE version as well as Dan Marshall (AKA dan408) for his help with the MATE release. Thank you!

Features

GNOME 3.10

GNOME 3.10 will have a number of new applications and new features that will please GNOME-lovers. This release includes a new music application (gnome-music), a new maps application (gnome-maps), a revamp for the system status menu, and Zimbra support in Evolution. A preview of GNOME on Wayland compositor is also finally available. Refer to the GNOME 3.10 announcement for more details.

KDE Plasma Workspaces 4.11

A modern, stable desktop environment, this release includes faster Nepomuk indexing, improvements to Kontact, KScreen integration in KWin, Metalink/HTTP support for KGet, and much more. Refer to the KDE Plasma Workspaces 4.11 announcement for more details.

But wait, there’s more …

Derived from Fedora 201 beta, Korora benefits from Fedora’s long tradition of bringing the latest technologies to open source software users.

A complete list with details of each new inherited feature is available at the Fedora 20 Accepted Proposals List

  • Application Installer brings a new interface for installing packages in GNOME.
  • NetworkManager should be able to configure bond master and bridge interfaces with commonly used options and recognise their existing configuration on startup without disrupting their operation.
  • Ruby on Rails 4.0, which is the latest version of well know web framework written in Ruby.
  • LVM has introduced thin provisioning technology, which provides greatly improved snapshot functionality in addition to thin provisioning capability. This change will make it possible to configure thin provisioning during OS installation.
  • Plasma-nm replaces the current network applet in KDE with a new one and bring the latest features in NetworkManager to KDE.
  • SSD Cache is updated thanks to the recent kernel to support (fast) SSD caching of (slow) ordinary hard disks.
  • VirtManager user interface for managing virtual machines has the ability to easily manage snapshots.

What is the Beta release?

The Beta release is the last important milestone before the release of Korora 20. Join us in making this a solid release by downloading, testing, and providing your valuable feedback.

Of course, this is a beta release, meaning that some problems may still be lurking. A list of the problems already known can be found at the Common F20 bugs page.

Kororaa 17 (Bubbles) Beta released

The first beta release of Kororaa 17 (codename “Bubbles”) has been released and is available for download, in 32 and 64 bit versions for KDE and GNOME. This new release includes major updates of most packages including the kernel (3.3.7), office and desktops (KDE 4.8 and GNOME 3.4).

Upgrade
We are currently working on a way for existing users to easily upgrade, however this is not yet available for the beta release. For those wanting to test out this release, it is recommended to perform a fresh install or use a virtual machine. It’s a Live DVD, so it can be tested without installation too :-)

Known issues

  • GNOME – Cannot select session for live user at login. Set a password (for liveuser user) and it will work (upstream bug report).
  • GNOME – Poweroff menu entry missing, only shows suspend. Hold down the alt key, or activate Alternative Status Menu plugin using GNOME Tweak Tool.
  • Jockey – no driver for ATI cards. The proprietary fglrx driver is currently not compatible with X.Org 1.12, we have to wait for a new release that works.

Desktops
The GNOME 3 desktop has a custom theme available, as well as several extensions to provide an enhanced user experience (and help ease the transition from GNOME 2.x). It also comes with the GNOME Tweak Tool to allow further customisation. GNOME Shell now has software rendering support and should work under virtual machines.

This release also includes the Cinnamon from Linux Mint as an alternative GNOME desktop.

The KDE desktop has specific default applications, such as Firefox for the web and VLC for media, etc.

Features
Derived from Fedora 171, this new major release comes with the usual Kororaa extras out of the box, such as:

  • Tweaked KDE and GNOME base systems
  • Third party repositories (Adobe, Chrome, RPMFusion, VirtualBox)
  • Firefox as the default web browser (integrated with KDE)
  • Firefox extensions included (Adblock Plus, DownThemAll, Flashblock, Xclear)
  • Microblogging client (Choqok for KDE, Empathy for GNOME)
  • Full multimedia support (excluding Flash, see next)
  • Installer for Adobe Flash plugin
  • Jockey device manager to handle drivers such as AMD/ATI and NVIDIA
  • Video editor (Kdenlive for KDE, OpenShot for GNOME)
  • VLC as the default media player
  • SELinux enabled (particularly worthwhile for Flash)
  • English (Australian/British) support & dictionaries
  • and more..

FIX: Kororaa 16 GNOME Shell crash

This took me a while to find, but removing the nautilus-pastebin package will stop GNOME Shell from crashing when searching (as seen in Beta 16). No restart required.

sudo yum erase nautilus-pastebin

Sorry about that, it was very hard to find!

Thanks,
Chris

Kororaa 16 (Chum) Beta released

The first beta release of Kororaa 16 (codename “Chum”) has been released and is available for download, in 32 and 64 bit versions for KDE and GNOME. This new release includes major updates of most packages including the kernel, office and desktops (KDE 4.7 and GNOME 3.2).

Upgrade
We are currently working on a way for existing version 15 users to upgrade to the final release of version 16, however this is not yet available for the beta release. For those wanting to test out this release, it is recommended to perform a fresh install or use a virtual machine. It’s a Live DVD, so it can be tested without installation too :-)

Known issues

  • Some addons for GNOME have caused crashes and the gnome-shell-extension-alternative-status-menu is not included in the beta. To shutdown, hold down the Alt key while hovering over Suspend option in menu.
  • Searching (Alt + F2) in GNOME causes Shell to crash.
  • Jockey (the proprietary driver manager) was accidentally left out, but is installable (GNOME: jockey-gtk jockey-selinux KDE: jockey-kde jockey-selinux)

Desktops
The GNOME 3 desktop has several extensions to provide an enhanced user experience (and help ease the transition from GNOME 2.x). It also comes with the GNOME Tweak Tool to allow further customisation.

Kororaa Beta2 bug fixes

If you’re running Kororaa Beta2, there are a few bugs which require fixing.

Yum
Firstly, the KDE version incorrectly included Yum from Rawhide (development) tree (GNOME version does not have this issue). This means you are running an untested version of Yum, the system’s default package manager.

To fix this, disable the repo (or remove the repository file for it), then downgrade yum to the stable version.
sudo sed -i 's/enabled=1/enabled=0/g' /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-yum-rawhide.repo
sudo yum downgrade yum

Livna
The Livna repository, which is configured out of the box, seems to be having lots of problems with availability. This will be fixed in the next release, but in the mean time, you can disable or remove that repository.
sudo sed -i 's/enabled=1/enabled=0/g' /etc/yum.repos.d/livna.repo

If you find any more issues, please let us know!
